Only available here, and at Bletchley Park, a re–printed parody first produced in 1918 but suppressed because of the sensitive nature of the contents. Written by World War One code–breakers as a pantomime, performed in November 1918, and not seen light of day until now. The author became head of national security and deemed that the book should not be made public since it might identify cryptographers working for the Admiralty in London. Only two copies survived, one in private hands, and one in the Churchill Archives at Cambridge. With the relaxation of restrictions in recent years, this Alice parody by Frank Birch, verse by Dilly Knox, and illustrations by G. P. Mackeson, has been reprinted with introductions by Mavis Batey (cryptographer in WWII) and Edward Wakeling.
Aznet Publishing, 2007, paperback, 64pp, amazing value at £5 plus postage.
Also available:
The Cipher Alice written in Lewis Carroll’s "Telegraph Cipher" adapted and coded by Edward Wakeling with illustrations by the children of Edward Peake Middle School, Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, privately produced, 1990, paperback, 60pp., similarly amazing value at £5 plus postage.
